You are bidding on an an Antique Traveling Apothecary Chemist Balance Scale and Weights W & T. Avery. The balance scale beam measures 6" long with a center balance lever of 2" and a tassel at the end measuring 1". The balancing disks are concave measuring 2 1/2" and are made of brass. The discs hang from the beam approximately 5". Included are the following weights:
2 cylindrical weights with the number 1 and 1/2 on the top.
1 rectangular weight indicating TWO DRACHMS (3ij)
1 rectangular weight indicating ONE DRACHMS (3j)
1 rectangular weight indicating 2 SCRUPLFS (backwards eij)
1 rectangular weight indicating 1 1/2 SCRUPLFS (3 g)
1 rectangular weight indicating 1 SCRUPLES (backwards e)
1 rectangular weight indicating HALF SCRUPLE
The above weights have W&T AVERY LIMITED BURINGHAM in raised letters
The following brass cut weights indicating grains ranging from 6,5 4, 3, 2, grains.
Both the weights and balance are housed in an oak wooden box with a front hasp. The oak box has no cracks or breaks and is in very good condition. All the other items are in good condition although there are spots of patina on the brass.
