For your consideration is an extremely rare antique Sundial - an instrument designed for measuring time, used since ancient Egyptian times and now a well-regarded element of any garden of sophistication
Made of thick cast iron, with a triangular gnomon
Dial plate with Roman numerals and the name of the manufacturer - S. MOORE / KENSINGTON CT. // L. 41'36
This sundial has an incredibly interesting history.
It is only one of 100 manufactured
, made during the years
1840-1841
. Mr. Moore was born in 1798, and despite graduating from Yale, devoted himself to business and entrepreneurship. His sundials quickly became famous for their quality around the New England region. However, due to a small profit margin (each cost 50 cents at the time to make, but sold for , including sales commission by the end seller), the production quickly ended in the year following it's beginning. This makes them an extremely rare and sought-after collector's find.
This sundial is calibrated for a latitude of 41° 36’ - located between Hartford and Waterbury, Connecticut. It has a range of 150 miles, it can be most precise and correct in the area within that band of latitude -  as far North as Montpelier, Vermont and as far south Washington, DC.
All original, antique and authentic
Measurements:
Approx.
10" diameter (across), 6" high with gnomon
Weighs about 5 lbs. 8 oz.
Condition:
Very Good overall.
Please see
photos. Slight oxidation, consistent with age and use. Charming botanical moss remains. All original.
