c1780 18th CENTURY WOOD ENCASED NAVIGATION COMPASS
UNMARKED AS TO MAKER - FOR LAND USE OR WATER
    NAVIGATIONAL USE
Unmarked as to maker this super early compass from the late 18th century was produced in a workshop either of American
    origin or possibly European.
Originally made with no cover.   Made as shown.  No mounting holes underneath.  With some remnant of paper or a label.
Cover glass appears to be not original as it has no bubbles or waviness to the glass, but an old
appropriate piece of glass can be had and cut and fitted easily if so desired.
With distinctive bright orange compass face banding: A generally standard used color of orange
generally or mostly found in early 18th to early 19th Century instrumentation, including electrical
devices as they progressed into the 1830's.
Wood encased instrument measures 1 1/4" x 6 7/8" DIA. (closed) in size.
The compass works as it should with no restrictions.  Designed with no needle lifter or lock.
No chips, cracks or missing parts.  Some of paper compass card with surface loss at NNW quadrant.
Wonderful bubbling of lacquer surface on wood encasement.    Wear is consistent with age and use.
Please see all photos as they are part of the description.
