    Description

    For your consideration is a Surveyor's Compass By George Heisley, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, mid-19th century, the silvered dial signed G. J. Heisley, Harrisburg, with engraved star at north, Blued dial needle, the brass plate with outkeeper for 1-16,twin bubble levels, sighting vanes and cover.
    George Heisley (1789-1880) was the son of Fredrick Heisley, also a clock and instrument maker. A flute player, he is credited as having selected the song "To Anacreon in Heaven" as the music to the words of "The Star Spangled Banner", while serving in the Pennsylvania State Militia, defending Baltimore.
