This is an antique black and white postcard of Singapore. It shows a view of a beautiful Malay Lady, who is smoking a Cigarette. At that time only Boys and Men were smoking. The only Girls and Women, who were smoking were Prostitutes.
Smoking in public has for a long time been something reserved for men and when done by women has been associated with
promiscuity.
This postcard was published by Max H. Hilckes, Singapore in the period 1905-1919. So it is one HUNDRED years
OLD
. The publisher’s code is No. 235. However a little bit dirty on the back it does not affect the picture on the front (see scan) and it is still a great collectible. Condition: very good.
This postcard should be in every Singapore collection.
